De 1992 à 1995, une trentaine de chercheurs œuvrant dans la vallée du Rhône et sur le littoral de la Gaule Narbonnaise, dans le cadre du programme européen Archaeomedes, a pu analyser de manière statistique près d’un millier de sites de la période gallo-romaine, base documentaire d’une ampleur inédite et dont les résultats mettent à mal nombre d’idées reçues (Van der Leeuw 1995).
