This paper examines the phenomenon of Latin American street gangs in Catalonia, based on police observations. Among the key factors underlying the present study are the following: the organizational characteristics of the groups, the level of member involvement in criminal activity, causes the formation of these groups and preventive strategies to be adopted for treatment and prevention. We performed a detailed analysis of Anglo-Saxon studies on the phenomenon of street gangs and refers to the situation of Latin American bands in Catalonia compared with European and American counterparts.
